  1. What is the main organising principle of Browser based systems ?
File browser cache info in the DB for quick access but the information is in the original file. The model is known as the truth is in the file.                                                                                
  1. How do cataloguing systems organise their images ?
The most up to date info is maintained in the catalogue database. 
When photos are first indexed – a record is created for each photo 
file containing the info about it; a preview of the image is created 
and stored and can be accessed even if the file is not available; 
and any metadata in the file is harvested and associated with the
 photo in the catalogue and the metadata is parsed into groups 
(creator name, keywords, ratings, or locations).          
  1. How does a cataloguing system make changes to an image ?
Adding information like keyword just makes a note in the catalogue
 record for the photo. When you make a rendering change to an 
image with catalogue-based PIE software, you are changing the 
 information in the catalogue and in the preview that gets cached,
 but not necessarily touching the original.                                                                                                       
  1. Can other programs see these changes ?                             No because it is stored in the catalogue and not with the original file.
  2. How does a cataloguing system make changes to an image available to other programs ?
 It can be done if derivative files are made (JPG, TIFF, PSD OR DNG) can show the adjusted images in  way accessible to nearly any program.
  1. List 5 advantages of Cataloguing based PIE software ?
    1. Associates information with one original. Info created, stored & cross referenced in one place. Multiple rendering can be attached to a single source image and managed in the same environment. Saves space, time and confusion.            
    2. Creates useful groups of scattered images. Cataloguing programs organise by metadata, proximity in the directory structure is largely irrelevant.                     
    3. Works with offline images. Can access photos not connected to the computer.                                                                                                                                                
    4. Eases backup and restoration tasks. It can be backed up early in the process because the original is never changed.                                                                     
    5. Generates multiple output types from a single source.                                          
  2. Give two examples of software that combine Image Cataloguing and Editing functions ?
    1. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom

Creating a composition using Smart Objects


This was a fun exercise since everytime I tried to use smart objects before I always got confused not knowing which image to work on. Now I know. 

The Place command was another thing that was a puzzle. It does just what it says, places the selected image from file into the the PS document you are working on. Where as File>Open As a Smart Object opens the file in a new window. 

Double clicking on the Smart Object layer opens the original file in a separate document that you can then make adjustment upon. 

If the same image has been used for various layers of Smart Objects all the layers can be modified at the same time. 

Smart Objects images can be replaced by another image and all the transformations will stay the same on the new image.

Exercise 6 – Non-Destructive Editing

Preamble
This exercise is aimed at giving practice in applying the tools and techniques used for non-destructive editing.
 All the operations used to carry out the following exercise should be done in a non-destructive manner.
Precise instructions are not given, just the tasks that must be performed. If you do not know how to carry out the tasks non-destructively then ask the teacher for help.

Questions
1.     Open the image NDE-1.tif in Adobe Camera Raw and do the following :-
i.       Use the Straighten tool to straighten and crop the image.
ii.      Adjust the colour temperature.
iii.     Adjust the Basic controls to give good rendition of the view outside the lighthouse.
iv.    Use the HSL/Greyscale control panel to make the orange rocks and foliage slightly more saturated.
v.     Use the Local Adjustment Brush to lighten the floor and ceiling to reveal a little more detail in these areas.
vi.    Use a second soft Local Adjustment Brush to brighten the light lens and add a yellow colour to it.
2.     Open the image into Photoshop as a smart object.
3.     Use ‘File->Place…’ to add NDE-2.tif as a smart object into the image. (Press enter when the image appears.)
i.       Flip the new layer horizontally so the photographer is facing in the opposite direction.
ii.      Resize the new layer to make it a bit smaller.
iii.     Remove the background from the new layer by creating a layer mask. (There are a number of ways to do this).
iv.    Move the photographer into an appropriate position at the bottom of the frame, and resize if necessary.
4.     Double-click on the NDE-1 icon in the layers panel to open it in ACR.
i.       Make a change and resave to see the effect.
5.     Double-click on the NDE-2 icon in the layers panel to open it in Photoshop.
i.       Make a change and resave to see the effect.
6.     If you have worked Non-Destructively throughout this exercise you should be able undo or modify any of the editing changes you have performed.

 The source image is wrapped up with a set or many sets of instructions for rendering the photo.     1. Image takes up less storage space than having a duplicate.

  2. Define ‘Parametric Image Editing’ :-
Editing images by creating instructions or parameters parametric image editing (PIE).                                                                                                                                                         
  1. What is the difference between a Live Rendering and a Fixed Rendering ?
Live Rendering uses smaller proxy versions to display changes that are kept in separate instructions (metadata) then when ready apply them to the original Hi Res copy. Fixed Rendering converts the RAW mosaiced image into a form of a JPEG preview. This is because most RAW, other than DNG, are proprietary and undocumented and third-party software should generally not make any alterations to a raw file because of the possibility of corrupting the file.                                                                                                                                                         
                                                                                                                                                        
  1. List three advantages of NDI :-
    1. Multiple photo manipulation. Creating instructions for adjustments makes it easy to apply settings made for one photo to many others very quickly.                                                                                                                                                 
    2. Unlimited undo. The processing instructions are easy to change to create a different interpretation of an image.                                                                                                                                                
    3. Space savings. Instructions are a lot smaller than pixels to store, the storage requirements are greatly reduced.
