Image processes where the source image may be adjusted in a way that leaves the original data intact.
A version of the photo file that has had some adjustments incorporated – it is derived from the original. (Save As)
The source image is wrapped up with a set or many sets of instructions for rendering the photo. Adjustment Layers.
Editing images by creating instructions or parameters parametric image editing (PIE).
Live Rendering uses smaller proxy versions to display changes that are kept in separate instructions (metadata) then when ready apply them to the original Hi Res copy. Fixed Rendering converts the RAW mosaiced image into a form of a JPEG preview. This is because most RAW, other than DNG, are proprietary and undocumented and third-party software should generally not make any alterations to a raw file because of the possibility of corrupting the file.
